Good Evening T-Net Nation! I was able to get out for a quick 2 hour hunt in some local woods after work today. My first decent sounding target turned out to be a large copper. That was a very nice surprise. I couldn't quite tell what it was so I put it away, and kept hunting. After about another hour of hunting, I hit a pocket spill of three Mercury dimes. Another nice surprise. Given that it was almost pitch black at this point I backed up my gear, turned on my headlamp and headed for home. It took me a while to ID the large copper. After some gentle cleaning and some internet research, I'm pretty sure its a 1771 French 1 Sol Louis XV. It measures about 27 mm in diameter, weighs about 12.4 grams, and is about 2.6 mm thick. This came as a total surprise to me. I've never come across one before, and I'm guessing that they weren't all that common here in Massachusetts back in the late 1700's. Enjoy the pictures, and thanks for taking a look. HH.

Congrats Silvermonkey, rare find indeed!

To me French coinage from this period is a special breed and I'm saying banner worthy!
