Good Evening T-Net Nation! I was able to get out for a quick 2 hour hunt in some local woods after work today. My first decent sounding target turned out to be a large copper. That was a very nice surprise. I couldn't quite tell what it was so I put it away, and kept hunting. After about another hour of hunting, I hit a pocket spill of three Mercury dimes. Another nice surprise. Given that it was almost pitch black at this point I backed up my gear, turned on my headlamp and headed for home. It took me a while to ID the large copper. After some gentle cleaning and some internet research, I'm pretty sure its a 1771 French 1 Sol Louis XV. It measures about 27 mm in diameter, weighs about 12.4 grams, and is about 2.6 mm thick. This came as a total surprise to me. I've never come across one before, and I'm guessing that they weren't all that common here in Massachusetts back in the late 1700's.
