Had an archaeologist tell a friend of mine that it is illegal to hunt with a metal detector in the ocean water on any beach in Florida, not just treasure coast, that the state owns rights to all in the water.

There are no state laws or statutes that prohibit the use of a metal detector underwater (State Submerged Bottom lands) Chapter 267 of the Florida Statutes. However, that same state of Florida statute prohibits the removal of anything older than 50 years old. There are also restrictions for marine sanctuaries and locations on the maritime heritage trail, as well as within 3000 yards of any of the shipwreck lease sites.

Archaeologists? sometimes ya just have to wonder...

SurfRat,

We are looking at 3/17 thru about 3/21 give or take a day, depending on the weather, money and how I feel. Going to try to be in Miami Sat morning to start and play it by ear from there. Not sure how much trbl getting rooms will be due to Spring Break time. I have you number and will give you a call when it is a little closer.
