Depends on the roots you encounter. I haven't touched mine except an occasional dressing with a fine single-cut mill file to keep the edge smooth. The serrations are mostly for sod/grass roots I believe. If you're in the woods battling saplings and heavier brush/roots I guess you could use a chainsaw file to get inside the teeth cut-outs sharp.

But If that was the case I think I'd invest in a heavy keyhole saw in addition to the Lesche - it would work much better.

I expoxied rare earth magnets on the blade side of the hand guard. Works well for me.

Never really cut with it in the desert.
 

I have a leche and love it but, as you say, it is dull.
I should sharpen it but haven't needed to cut roots yet.

I cut small roots with mine all the time. If you have bigger roots, you'll need a shovel.
