myself personally have lost 1 good artifact walking back, it was a high grade killer uniface knife, orange bright yellow material , i focused on a killer find morso that day, and when i got back i was like awwwwwww ****. about a month ago, me and my friend were out, and he found the closest thing to a crescent i have seen in these areas, but much larger , his piece was 3 in at the middle of the bend, and sure enough, when we got back i asked to see it again and he said awwww ****. his was lost due to making sure he still had his keys "key check"
so lets hear ur alls

Lost my temper several times after seeing several different sets of footprints all over my favorite field. I collected it alone until the owner leased to some Memphis hunters. Out of the kindness of his heart he told then I have arrowhead collecting rights around the springs. No till farming techniques are almost as bad as those deer hunters.

I used to have a nice leather pouch that I took with me on my hunts that I kept all my finds in. I had found a really nice Adena Point, a nice little Serrated Palmer, a couple of Birdpoints, and a few Scrapers and they were all in the pouch which was tied to my belt loop(big mistake). I found a Thebes Point and went to put it in the pouch and it was gone. It had been probably a half hour since my last find and the last time I had put anything in the pouch. I backtracked my tracks but it was getting close to dark and the since the pouch was brown and the dirt was brown I didn't have any luck finding it. I had to work the next morning so I didn't get to go back up to the spot until later that afternoon and when I got there I could see that others had been there that day. I went back to the spot where I had found the Thebes and focused mt search in that area and never did find it. I figure whoever was there that morning probably got lucky and found it and got themselves some nice pieces for free.

I also had a buddy who liked to take his St Bernard with him hunting and he found a killer T Drill about 3 inches long and stuck it in his shirt pocket. He got to playing with the dog while we were taking a break and when we got back to hunting I asked if I could see the Drill again and he couldn't find it. We figured it popped out when he was fooling with the dog so we went back to that area to look but the ground was torn up from the dog we never did see it. We even hunted the same area right after the next hard rain and never saw it again.

I lost myself once.

There are some petroglyphs on a river bluff on federal property not far from where I live. One day a couple winters ago my creeks were all froze over so I decided to go see if I could find them and get some pictures. I drove to the nearest access point, parked the truck and started walking cross country downstream but not in sight of the river. It was sunny when I left home...a real nice day for pictures, but by the time I started the long walk toward where I thought the petroglyphs were located it had clouded up The public property I was on isn't all that big...maybe a mile wide and 4 miles long bordered on one side by the river and on the other side by private bottomland farms so there's no way to get seriously lost....just inconvenienced. I knew the general area I needed to get to and headed toward it. Along the way I encountered some flooding because the river was high and had to detour around it through a big piece of timber. I got through that timber and turned back toward the river only to encounter more water so I detoured again this time up a low terrace away from the river. Well long story short I had gone further downstream than I thought and had passed a bend in the river and when I finally turned back toward where I thought the river was I walked and walked and walked and no river.....well duhhh it had turned and I was parallelling it. Finally I came to the river right at a bend and looked around and realized I had no idea which way the petroglyphs were and decided since it was getting latej...about 330 pm...I best just head back. Remember at this point I still didn't know that I had passed a river bend and was now standing at a second bend. So thinking that I was at first riverbend I started cross country toward where I thought the truck was...thinking that I would by doing so bypass the flooded area. Well I walked and walked and next thing I knew I was at a posted boundary line. Knowing that I had gone downstream I turned right and followed the property line back to the road. Well this worked and when I got to the road it was 430. I walked down that road for stinking ever before I finally got back to my truck. When I got home I got on terraserver.com and looked at arial photos to see what I'd done. In bypassing the flooded areas I'd missed the petroglyphs, missed a bend in the river and walked clear down to the next bend. All in all I'd walked close to 6 miles, never really lost but certainly disoriented and not where I wanted to be.

Never have gotten pics of those petroglyphs. One of these days I'll take the boat out on that river and get some.

I feel your pain Archer. I have gotten lost (turned around) a number of times. Once I was so turned around I came off a mtn into Alabama from Tennessee when I was 17. I can now usually wander the mtns all day and then make a bee line back to my transportation. I had to learn that I was right leg dominant and over distance will walk in a slight right curve. So I make an effort to bear left. This happens mostly when I am on flat level ground. Texas used to wear me out being so flat. I always carry some type of pack for my artifacts with a zipper compartment and have been lucky with them so far.
I regret chunking every broke and knapped tool as a kid not knowing what they were.
Good topic.

lost a pretty flintridge hafted scraper once when i put it in my pocket and didnt know there was a hole there, only other thing ive lost was a cell phone had it in my shirt pocket and must have fell out when i bent over to check something out ,never found either one

Chong, you might be able to relate being a desert hunter as well...

About 10 years ago I set off to visit a site in the desert alone (first mistake.) It's one of my favorite sites, and is a couple of miles from where I can get in the truck, so I have to hike the remaining distance usually in 100 degree plus conditions. I carry two one gallon jugs of water with me to cache on the way to the site, and I pick them up (and drink them) on my way back. I got into some nasty cactus on the way there, so I went around it on the way out and missed the original trail. I finished my water on the site, and I back tracked a while looking for the water, then I just decided to go back to the car. I was pretty sick by the time I got back, didn't quite get heat stroke but closer than I want.

My next purchase was GPS so I can mark my caches.

As far as finds, I've lost a couple to a torn pocket, but I've been pretty lucky. I'd rather loose a piece in the field than break a piece by accident.
