Was able to get out for almost 2 hours today in same spot we have hit and recently found a cannon ball. Found some flat buttons toasted Indian and some sort of buckle type thingy? Best find was a war of 1812 era Light Artillery 1st regiment button in great shape. Pretty excited since it’s my first US military button found.

Great button! Love the designs from that period.

Lovin’ that button! But what interests me is that 18th c. silver garder buckle! How about some cleaned up pics

Congrats on your first military button. It will always be a favorite of yours. Heck, it would be a favorite of mine!

Unfortunately small part of back broke off. I still have it though. I had no idea it would be that old. Holy crap. Any more info on it? What makes you so sure? How would you recommend cleaning it? No more questions haha 6D2E6EB4-A87D-40D3-BDBA-B7A4993DDACC.webpC9C4DB9B-F341-4346-A786-5F9530A3642D.webp

Crud is coming off a bit. Looks silver to me. I was so excited over button I looked over it lol. I don’t have any baking soda on me right now. Maybe I’ll try that soon?

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

That buckle awesome. If silver it's way rarer than the regiment button (which is great as well). From the pics it does seem to be silver.
Congrats!

And it broke when I was looking at it. :BangHead:

I don't see a hallmark but being from 1700's and probably not British it's not that surprising. The French, for example, stated requiring silver hallmarks only around 1800.
I doubt the light clean with wet baking soda will damage it (unless it's plated), just make sure to wash it off.

Something similar to this I believe but without the stones.20190402_224743.webp

I wouldn't do any more cleaning of the piece. I like a bit of honest verdigris on a dug piece for its authentic appearance.

Very nice button and buckle. Those both are super finds.
Congrats!

Couple of excellent keepers that would look great in any display case. Congrats on the 2 awesome pieces of history saves.

First military button ? That's pretty darn good, since most people start in the WW1 or WW11 era !! Congrats on a great find. That one would be the highlight of my display case if it were mine.

Very cool finds! Congrats! :icon_thumleft: Button and buckle are awesome!
