Gold rush in Berks — economist ties hype, excitement to rise in prices as people flock to sell items
Gold closed at $981.60 per ounce Monday on the New York Mercantile exchange.
Some traders had expected, and hoped, that gold would reach an all-time high of $1,000 per ounce Tuesday.
Instead, gold fell Tuesday to $963.90 an ounce in New York.
But as rain fell Tuesday and Hamburg’s sidewalks were largely empty, Muller’s store was busy as dealers tried to unload gold coins and other customers sold jewelry.
“We’re busier than we’ve ever been,” said Muller, who buys precious metals and then sells them to smelters.
