Little plate kind of thing?

Found this yesterday and can't figure out what it is.It was found at a early plantation homestead not to far from where I would imagine the front door might have been.It is about 1 1/4 long and a little over 1 inch wide.It's brass and about as thick as a dime or maybe a quarter and has a clipped corner style.At first I was thinking maybe some kind of pin or broach,but looking at the back attachment again, I don't know?Maybe some kind of a small box plate of some kind?I am really Hoping someone might know!thanks joe.
