ear tags werent used until later, and most of em are plastic. I suspect it is a tag off a seed bag.

Thanks for the replies. Your ideas give me other investigative possibilities.

It is lead. Tried searching for "Rich Clayton Leeds" and cannot find anything on that person or company. I see Richard Clayton and in Leeds, England but nothing that shows this. I will search for seed bag tags and cloth seals to see what gets close.

think you are right Bigcypresshunter. Dating is challenging cause I cannot find Rich Clayton, Richard Clayton or Richard Clayton Leeds

From the link I posted shows how the lead seal was folded and crimped.

I find matches for a cloth merchant named Richard Clayton in Leeds at the beginning of the 1800's. He was on Blackman Lane. Aside from that I didn't find anything of interest about him.

In the center column of this article, under Bankrupts: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/Edinburgh/issue/2636/page/255
The other articles I found from the same era which refer to him as cloth merchant were articles about his daughters marriage and about his Will and Testament, but had no info about the business itself.
