??? a friend and I went detecting last night at a house built in 1910. I found a 1918 wheat in good shape, my oldest coin so far! Then my friend found an 1898 Indian Head!! I also found a spent 7.62 casing, a copper nail and some other odds and ends.I also found an unfired 22 cal bullet, no casing, about 4 inches deep with the Deleon!!! It took us 15 mins to find the thing it was so small! Right before leaving I got a signal that was alittle off on my Deleon and since I dig everything I dug it. This is what popped up. No other markings on it, it is non-magnetic made of brass or copper? I know it is from a Yale lock of some kind but don't know how old what type of lock etc? I still think it is really cool!!! Also can someone help me by telling me how to post the pictures in a smaller, easier to see way? I would really appreciate it!

Copy the picture into your windows "paint" program

Select "stretch & skew"

Resize as desired... 50% might be good...

Save as .jpg

Your done.

Does anyone know where I can start looking for info on this lock part? I understand if no one knows anything about it but a clue where I might look would be very appreciated.

Sorry, This one is not in my books. I'll keep looking though.

Could be a front cover for a large Yale lock. To cover the key hole. The top appears to be hinge post.

What's on the back? Any place to put a key?

For the size, shape, and lack of obvious "lock" things, I would say it some sort of fob used for advertising and such.

That's what I was leaning towards.

I think like you, that is a cover to a lock. I know Yale used to make hinge covered locks a long time ago but cannot seem to find anything on the internet about them. If my dad were still alive he could have told me he used to be a locksmith, alas he is not. As I indicated above what you see is what you get. No other writing on it is simply a flat piece of metal that has the word Yale on the front of it. It was found at a home bulit in 1910 in close proximity to a 1898 IH and a 1918 wheat penny. No matter what it is an interesting piece I just wondered what type of lock it came off of. Thanks for everyone's help and input!!!!!

Okay I have tried everyway to ID what type of lock this came off of. One locksmith told me it might be from and old lock and this was what covered the key hole. I even sent the pic to Yale but they never responded. This is my last request for help with IDing the type of lock it came off of. If anyone knows please let me know.

I sent a picture of this item to Yale lock and they responded they have no information available on this item. So I guess I will have a ???? in my box of treasures. Thanks everyone for looking at it.
