I found this today and am unsure what it is. I suspect that it is one side to a locket? It's made of a gold colored material, depicts two birds at the bottom with an umbrella above them. It also has cracked dark glass in the background. Not in great condition but a cool find either way. Any ideas from the jewelry gurus out there? Thanks for looking!

It almost looks more like winged lions or something other than birds?

More then likely you are right on the locket! If there is anyway you can see if there is a very small screw hole on top too where a chain could attach to that may help you figure that part out maybe...

Keepsake lockets can be made with a glass pane at the front so that what is inside can be seen without opening the locket. Such lockets are generally used for items like locks of hair which could fall out and become lost if the locket were repeatedly opened where as photograph lockets are generally enclosed on all sides and the photographs are secured by pieces of clear plastic or glass.

That black glass (or dark glass) in there looks interesting.. I don't know if you are a bottle guy or gal and are knowledgeable about vintage glass, etc but from the looks of it this piece and all it could possibly be mid to late 19th century piece but then again it could date into the 1900s...

Can't make out any screw holes on top. The only thing I notice is that the top is flattened. I'm guessing where the locket hinged? Thanks for the info! I definitely don't know anything about old glass or jewelry pieces

I think it is at least turn of the century but it could be 1860-1880ish! Are you digging up any 19th C artifacts in the same spot or is it all 1900s type stuff?

All I have found on this lot are things from the early 1900s late 1800s. Noting with a date on it except for a1909 barber quarter. Found a necklace pendant that has a company logo on it that went out of business in 1898, token from around 1900 and a cool roman warrior pin that I suspect is the same age. I have hunted this tiny lot probably 10 times now and these cool little items keep coming up. What do you think of this roman warrior pin? Same age range?

The guy looks more like a Viking too me? I would say it is in the time range of the other artifacts you are digging up! Looks like you got a good ole house site that is producing pretty good relics. Look for a cellar or trash pit, sure there is one around if you got a old house site you are dealing with!

I did a quick image search on Victorian Umbrella Bird and saw a number of buttons, greeting cards, and artwork with birds and umbrellas. Not sure why the theme was popular but it must have been.

I have seen that Roman/Trojan pin before. Roman motiff must have been popular in the Edwardian period because my 1909 Sears catalog is full of Roman stuff.. The closure is 20th century.

i dont know,, but it looks to me after looking at it closer like its 2 Griffins under a tree. kind of like this image047.webp

Griffins supporting a palm-tree on an ivory panel.

12th century. Southern Sicily. Museo nazionale del Bargello, Florence, inv. nr. 83 C.

ItalSicily1arms

nor saying it is ,,, or that its that old,, just saying this is what it reminds of , not birds or umbrella..
i was thinking with griffins /mythology it may be the tree of life but drawing blanks on that lead. but this is closest i can come so far with griffins under a tree.

It looks like birds to me and as stated a common theme.
