Trevi Fountain thieves defy
public bathing laws
Two fully clothed men carrying metal detectors
entered the Trevi Fountain in Rome last Thursday
at 10:30 p.m., despite the many tourists still in the
square. The thieves had started to grab coins when
a policeman closed in and a violent struggle ensued.
One man managed to twist out of the policeman’s
grasp and threw himself back into the fountain; he
then escaped to a nearby alley but was caught by a
police patrol. One man had €33 in coins in his pocket,
and the other, who has a police record for petty
theft, had €103. The two were fined under a Rome
law banning bathing in public fountains
