Well , I bit the bullet and purchased my first long handle scoop and WOW. I must have purchase wrong, its heavy. WELL built but, heavy.
Will use it for now but, MY question. How do you guys carry them around the beach? Any rigs you make up or is it just detector in one hand and scoop in the other?.. On my smaller scoops I usually just hook them on one way or another.

About half the time I just hold it and drag it along, otherwise I have a loop attached to the handle that I can clip onto the back of my belt.

That's what I do after Erick showed me his set up

I use the Sunspot in the water and a screen sifter in the dry sand. Both I drag along, but I have also used a hook on my belt to attach the basket to, but with all the targets it gets old to keep attaching it to the hook. In the surf it is dangerous to secure the scoop to yourself as you can't let it go if needed quickly enough. If they aren't well built they don't last.

I carry mine over the shoulder, you'll get used to the weight with some time. You also need to get the mechanics down. The heavier scoop will be great when you're in the surf because it won't be flopping around in the waves/ current like a lighter aluminum scoop would do. Good Luck!

several of us here drag ours from the bucket

I had trouble with the weight at first too but I hardly notice it anymore. I just drag mine behind me and it also helps to steady me when a wave pushes me. I thought about hooking mine to my belt but decided I didn't want to have to unhook it everytime. For me... it is just easier to drag it.

I used a bungee cord with a Stainless snap swivel and it is long enough to stay hooked to my belt and dig, when done I just let it go again...

Fantastic, Thanks for the answers. I guess I'll try just dragging it for now and go from there.
It never stops to amaze me, the people here, ALL so helpful. A MD'ing Family. Thanks. JOe

Mine looks like yours but it is aluminum and not really heavy. Although it is aluminum, it is still very strong. I have torqued up that handle several times with some heavy loads and no problems so far. I carry it most of the time over my sholder or just hold it at waist level at a balance point on the handle.

I use mine as a third leg. Helps to stabilize me while sweeping.

I have a snap hook attached to a bungee cord and that attaches to a D ring on the belt on my goodie bag, & my detector is attached the same way on the other side. I can get out of it just as fast as I can dump a weight belt. that way the scoop just floats along behind me until I need it

You get use to it. Put anckle weights on and run a mile, you will feel like your legs are falling off, do it every day and in 2 weeks you want even know you have them on, it is the same with the scoop.

Treasuredigger is correct, in the surf you want a scoop the current doesn't easily move, it is also a good crutch if your hit by a rouge wave, and they make a great defensive weapon.

This scoop is well heavy enough to help me in the surf and maybe,,,,,, anchor a small boat.
Will be hitting the Jersey beaches next weekend to give the Excalibur it maiden beach trip. Really looking forward to it.
Also been looking at local lakes/beaches to fill in between the Salt trips. Thanks all, JOe

I just float mine merrily, merrily, merrily gently down the stream.

makes the scoop pretty much weightless and speeds up recovery time considerably.

That's a great set up for a lake but it wouldn't last ten seconds in the Florida surf....

FloridaBill, we could use it as a life preserver, though at times on the Atlantic side even that is questionable.......

kaptainkosmic, nice rig should work well on lakes and slow rivers.................

I have that same scoop and yes, it is a heavy mother, but you will get used to it. I just somethrow mine up over my shoulder like a rifle.
