Hello GrannyDigger,
There is a club called the Atlantic Treasure Club. You can do a google search for them and get more info from their site or as vpnavy mentioned, check out the New York sub forum for other NY-LI related gatherings/clubs. If I remember correctly the Atlantic group tend to congregate on Field 6 of Jones Beach. Thats all I really know about them. For the most part, if you try metal detecting the area beaches you will run into other local detectorists. I usually bump into 2 or 3 when I'm on the beach. For the most part everyone is friendly enough to chit chat for a few minutes. As long as you cover the holes you dig and follow common sense etiquette you will find the LI hunting community welcoming.
