At first I thought it wa a tobacco spear, but it's a little too narrow at the hollow end for that.It wouldn't fit on the end of a tobacco stick.Besides your in Illinois, don't think they raise tobacco there.Sorry no help, very cool find though.H.H.-diggummup

Good question. I don't know what it is. I found one similar to yours, at an old 19th Cent. farm site. It is made of copper and is hollow. It has a needle sharp point, and cleaned up nicely. See pic below:

Prairie,

well it seems we both have one.

After your post I went and just cleaned mine up a bit and it is copper; same size 7 1/2,( shadow in picture).

I was cleaning out the inside and water started to pass through the point. Did you check your point? Mine could have a hole in it or yours could still be clogged. Some type of needle?

Thanks for posting your photo.

have a good un.............

Shermanville,

Well I'll be darned!

Filled mine with water, no leak. Checked point under high magnification, no hole there

Looks like it may have fit on wooden shaft, however found no wood remnants inside.

Prairie,

have more info.

Have been working it with a crocus cloth to clean up.

I found an inscription near the base. "D X S" and under that "DES MOINES"

I would agree that they're lightning rods. Heres a lot that ended recently on ebay which has a couple very close to these. Item # 7358412226

nhbenz, you clinched it! Thanks for the link. I posted a close up below. No doubt about it; Tip to a lightning rod:
