Hello, everyone

I'm planning a family vacation to Gatlinburg, TN over the Fourth of July and a side trip for the first time to Gem Mountain (Spruce Pine NC) and would appreciate any tips/info that anyone could offer. (Someone already helpfully suggested wearing a trash bag to protect clothes, which was great input) We've also heard there are sites where tourists can poke around for gold with a metal detector, so I'm considering bringing mine along if I can pin down a location. If nothing else, it'll be a nice change from the blistering beaches of Florida!

Good luck to you all..

Hello, all.

Had a great time at Gem Mountain, and found quite a few emeralds, rubies, topaz, garnets and one sapphire..plus a bunch of "lesser gems".. had three of them cut and bought a tumbler on ebay for the rest. Its a Lortone QT-66 with two "one gallon" barrels...anybody know how large the biggest rocks should be that I can put in it (or is there an optimum size?) Some are 3"-4" and I'd hate to break them but also want the best results....

Thanks for all your help
