Looking for Gold Nuggets in old tailings

I was in French Gulch Northern California, I was metal detecting and found odd signals of certian stones.
I cheched with a magnet and was not iorn ore. I placed the concentric coil with small stone in the center and when on only these stones, when I lifted the coil up it beeped. It would beep when I went straight up but when I went side to side the signal was off & on like hitting something metalic.
Can somebody let me know if this has happend to you and what is it usually.
I saved about 9 to 10 of these stones which are like a beige ore/stone with some weigh to it.

sound like hot rocks...if in doubt crush em up and pan it

I've crushed up some rocks before near there and found stringers of gold in them. Post some pics and I will tell you if the rocks look familiar.

I think it would be a better idea to try and pocket mine the banks in the area.
