It could possibly be a key to a trumpet or some brass instrument but it doesnt have a spot for a cork gasket. I do believe its brass.Thank you your guess is as good as any ill have to research this. I found this on a site that used to be an old mill back in 1800s i found it in a river bank but this river bank has given lots of treasure the whole bank is littered with buttons i have pulled many civil war era buttons and railroad buttons out of the bank and a lot of them still attached to wool.

Helpful hint: I noticed that you have a torche lamp behind the object you are photographing. Best to have at least one light source behind you. Preferably two as to knock out any shadows. Also most cameras will have a setting for macro-photography, denoted by an icon of a flower. On this setting, one is able to focus on objects closer than other settings. Hope this helps.
BTW, I don't have a clue. I have several items I have kept over the years hoping that one day I'll figure out what they were used for. HH

I need clearer photos. Go outside in natural sunlight with the macro setting on your camera. Or get a strong desk lamp over your item and photo it that way.
