Yesterday, I stopped at my pickup bank and the lead teller told me that they had a new delivery guy this week. The guy commented about the half dollar boxes (he orders one for me and one for himself) and that there is no silver in them because their machines sort the silver out. Then the teller told him that we've both found silver in the boxes and he was surprised. Apparently his last comment to the teller was that he was going back to tell them to "recalibrate the machine because it isn't catching all of the silver". I told the teller that he was making it up because he didn't want to deliver the boxes and pick up the bags. It's amazing what people will say to not do work!

I used to get boxes from Brink's (before HSBC pulled out) and they rarely had any silver and about half of the halves were marked. In the Loomis boxes, I've done 8 and only 3 didn't have any silver and there are rarely any marked halves. Yesterday's box had 2 40% halves, 1967 and 1968D, and only 2 marked halves.

I wouldn't be suprised if the sorting machines are set at a higher sensitivity to cull out some of the silver but unless the workers are going through the coins themselves, there should still be some silver in the supply.

The Brink's guy has been pulling that same thing at my pick-up banks for a few months now.
Yep Scott, that's what I figured too, they just didn't want to handle the boxes/bags.

What a dink. Really, "Lets make myself disliked because these guys are finding cool coins". Some people have no life and are out to ruin peoples days to make themselves feel better about their dull life. Im a cashier at walmart and believe me, I have ran into a few fruit loops myself.

I've heard this twice in the past month!!! still finding silver. although finds have been low, but likely a coincidence

The way I see it CRH'ers give the Brinks, Lomis, Dunbar, guys job security. Always something to pick up and deliver :laughing7:

You know, I thought about "turning the tables" on them, and telling the head teller at my main pick-up bank (she is the one that always passes on the messages from the Brink's guy that they are culling) to pass it on to the Brinks guy that the less silver I find per box, the more I would have to up my volume, Hehehe

Back when i use to get halves from my best pickup bank from 2010-2012 (before the op manager seen halves being delivered and told the manager not to order anymore) the brinks guy delivered my normal weekly order one week and told the head teller that i must be some retired guy who sits around and looks at halves all day haha. Little did he know i worked two jobs and searched 10k a week in coins. The head teller was awesome at this bank, she retired in 2013. We had such a good relationship that she got some new packs of currency in 2011 for christmas time and somehow got two $1,000 ten dollar star note packs, 1999 edition. She sold a pack to me for face value and let me sell the other one for her. We both made 350 dollars on the deal. I was locked in at that bank after that.

Never tell the delivery guy, or anyone for that matter, that you're finding silver. If they say the machine sorts the silver out, tell em that's ok, cause you collect varieties, errors, etc.

I would have married that teller...I married mine:tongue3:

(Loomis..Brinks... whomever) sorting out silver coins from circulation sounds like urban myth rubbish. It would not be profitable enough to cull out silver coinage for the sole purpose of them selling. Factor in cost of machinery, paying employees (not just hourly rate, whet they cost the company AFTER benefits), and their costs to process and sell silver... it just wouldn't be worth it. Most workers would not have access to the money itself. The machines do all of the work counting and rolling, the workers simply move boxes of coin, pick up from banks/businesses, and deliver.

I have read rumors about drivers searching bags of coin in the armored trucks. Aren't these bags sealed at the bank, and sealed until they are dumped into a counter at the facility?

I call BS on any of the currency delivery companies sorting out silver. More people searching and fewer silver coins in circulation probably explain getting skunked more frequently.

I have heard these reports from tellers in the past as well.
I can't be sure if the tellers are making it up or if the drivers are really saying these things.
Anyway, it is are all Bull****.

It isn't profitable for anyone (person or company) to search (by hand or machine) for silver in circulation. This is because there isn't enough in circulation to pay expenses. Sure it is fun, but not profitable.

For individuals consider just two expenses;
1) Gas and wear and tear on your car
2) value of your time (how many hours spent x your hourly wage at work)

Even high volume high yield searchers are at a loss.

I agree that what the delivery guy said is most likely BS. Since both the teller and I get boxes of halves and go through them, I believe that the teller is saying the truth. The delivery guy said it, but I think it's just because he doesn't want to be bothered pickup up and delivering the extra coin, not because it's true. I just thought it was funny that it happened. It isn't going to stop us from ordering the boxes. I am still finding silver in them.
As far as not saying anything to the delivery guy (or anyone else) about our success, I wasn't there when it happened, so I couldn't stop the teller from saying that we've both found silver in the boxes.

Ditto on what FT says: Never use the "S" word.

Didn't we have a member who runs a refinery in Colorado who confirmed the local guys were in fact culling coins and selling them to him?
