Sorry for the long delay in replying, had not seen this post until now. I would have to conclude that the note was found deep in the cavern, not miles away from it. Wind Cave has over 143 miles of passageways, and is a network-maze type of cavern, VERY easy to get very lost in a hurry.

thanks ! I didn't research the Cave, But even 18 Miles inside seemed excessive for me.

I found more they carried out the group with the Mind Reader, who successfully found a pin that was hidden, which is why they went into the cave.
