My pap told us this treasure tale when we were kids.I haven't been able to find any on paper proof of this lost payroll, so i guess it's just another treasure legend for potter county. It is recorded that the damn workers did demand to be paid in gold.
When they were constructing the Austin Dam the workers were paid in gold.I have been told that one of the trains carrying the payroll ( don't know how much it was ) derailed coming down one of the switch backs into Austin , and the payroll was never found .
Sorry for such a short tale but this is all i was told.My brother and i camped out a bunch of times in the hills above Austin but never found any signs of a train wreck. The wreckage may have been gone by the 70's - 80's , and of course we didn't have a MD back then.
