C.C. Chennault killed in Richland Parish Louisiana -1910

While attempting to arrest a blacksmith known as J, C.Freeman,
Saturday evening about 6:30 o'clock town marshall, Christoher C.Chennault
was shot and instantly killed by Freeman.
During the day Freeman and Hartan Bagby also a blacksmith had had some
trouble about some tools which Bagby had in his shop and which Freeman
refused to let him take away. Twice during the day Freeman had cursed
and abused Bagby, if he bothered him, Freeman, about the tools.
The blacksmith shop is situated in the north end of Rayvi1le,
and there are several occupied residences quite near. Bagby
lived with Bob Wynn just across the street.
And it was for cursing and using obscene language in the street
and in the presence of ladies that Freeman was to be arrested.
There are two wide double doors on both the north and south
sides of the shop.
Bagby and Bob Wynn were with the Marshall Chennault. As Chennault and
Bagby approached the shop the south doors were closed; when they got
within a few feet.Chennault called to Freeman and told him to come out,
that he wanted to speak to him. Freeman asked who it was and when Chennault
told him. Freeman opened the door, as the marshall went to step in Freeman
snatched up a Winchester pump and fired. The distance was only a few feet,
and the whole load of buck shot struck Chennault in the lower part of the throat.
The neck bone was shattered and death instantaneous.
So quickly and so unexpectedly was the assault made that although Chennault
had his pistol in his bosom, where he carried it when without his coat,
every button of his shirt was still fastened, this going to prove that he
had no time to even make an effort to defend himself.
When Chennault fell dead Bagby and Wynn began to get away as fast as possible.
As Wynn started around a buggy he slipped and partly fell, at that instant Freeman
fired at him, the load of shot passing over
Wynn's bent body. The slip saved him from being killed.
Freeman then went out the north door to shoot Bagby, who was running to Wynn's
house, where he lived, just across the street. He fired at Freeman several times
with a pistol but missed. As he entered the door and was going through the hall
Freeman fired twice putting the two loads into the wall and door facing. These
shots passed through the walls and would have struck one of Wynn's ch1ldren directly
in line; had not Bagby snatched it up as he ran through.
When Freeman got back into the shop Mr. Balfour had arrived and he asked Freeman
who killed Chennault; Freeman replied, I killed him. Mr. Balfour was unarmed and
could do nothing. Freeman then started toward and up the N. 0. & W. R. R. tracks.
By this time E. S. Stewart, Lem Scott, and C. W. Hunt came up, Hunt had a gun but
Freeman got the drop on him and made him turn it loose.
Stewart followed by Scott and Hunt followed on after Freeman. Freeman drew his gun
on Stewart and told him that he, Freeman; would kill him if he did not stop, Stewart
did not stop, he kept on going toward Freeman but right then was when he put up the
talk of his life, that shotgun pointed straight at him brought talk from, Stewart that
he didn't know was there. Scott was coming on and helping out in the talk. Freeman
let him come up, and he agreed to surrender to the sheriff. They started back and when
near the shop he gave up his gun.
In the mean-time the sheriff's office was notified that there was trouble at Studstill's
old blacksmith shop, Deputy A. A. Abell, at once started to the scene; before he got there
he heard that Freeman had killed Chennault; and tried to kill others in the shop. Abell
jumped on some body's horse and rushed back to get his rifle. Before he could get away
from the office,Sheriff Traylor who had been notified at home galloped and aske4 for his
pistol, but when he learned the real thing he got his shotgun and started, all the other
men in town were running over each other trying to borrow a shotgun or rifle.
When Sheriff Traylor located Freeman he had given up his gun to Stewart and Scott.
He was at once hurried to jail.

Oldest market business in Rayville sold in 1927, Richland Parish, Louisiana

Notice to the Public

On January 1, 1927 the undersigned will take over and operate the meat
business formerly conducted by E.S. Stewart, and we wish to thank
the public for the valued patronage given in the past and ask that you.
one and all, continue with us, as we have been connected with this
business in the past. We are well known in Rayville and invite you to
keep right on with us, buying your good meats and eats at the same
old place, as we will spare no pains to give you the best.

When you are in doubt as to what you are to have for dinner, just
ring for No.1 or ask for the Sanitary Meat Market and maybe we
can help you solve your problems.
Respectfully.
J.J. Clack
J.R. Kennedy

Oldest Market Changes Hands

Elsewhere in this issue will be seen the announcement to the effect
that Mr. E.S. Stewart has sold his market to Messrs. Clack and
Kennedy, effective Jan 1st. In passing it is of interest when it is
remembered that this is the oldest market in Rayville.

About thirty-five years ago, Mr. Stewart opened up this business
and through all of these years the Stewart Market has served,
and served well, the people of this town in the line of fresh meats
and kindred items.

The new proprietors are not strangers to Rayville people by any
means, and will doubtless enjoy a liberal patronage.

Re: LOUISIANA BAYOU HUNT - DATE SET - APRIL '08 !

What's interesting about your account, River Rat, is that 7-8 years ago, I was contacted by some genealogists I had been in contact with that there was a cemetery north of Rayville on the River Road that had "disappeared." (I've recounted this elsewhere on here some years ago.) Well, I couldn't let that get away from me.

We met one Saturday morning and went to the spot where we thought it was. Couldn't find it. Found a church with a small cemetery, but no large old cemetery. Went back a couple of weeks later and got to looking at the property next door to the church. There was a thicket of woods next to the church's cemetery, with a barn beyond that. I entered the barn from the south side, and worked my way to the north side. There, I encountered a wooded area that was just stiflyingly thick. I stepped down into the wooded area and had to crawl from there, literally. Lots of bamboo, berry thickets, low brush. All at once I found myself nose to nose with a rather tall burial marker. It was from the 1800s. By now, my friends were crawling behind me, but were still several feet away. I began to read the writing on the tombstone. It was beautiful, sentimental, and very memorable. I finished reading and asked Dot if she'd gotten all that (she was writing). She said ... just a minute ... I'm crying. It was that beautiful.

We uncovered about 2-3 acres of cemetery, with C. C. Chenault's burial site and stone being one of them. He was one of the first officials of the Rayville law enforcement. The local sheriff, Charles McDonald, brought in prisoners to clean out the downed trees that had crushed old iron fences and all the brush. They did a good job. Still, we have to go back every year to make sure it's being kept cleared. During the clearing, we did find several stones piled up together, some of them being the grandparents of one of the ladies with me. A farmer had come along and pulled a bulldozer in behind the barn and proceeded to plow through the back of the cemetery, taking several stones with him. She knew where her grandparents' graves had been from visiting them in her childhood. The stones were no longer there, but you could see the grave indentions.

It's sad, but so many gravesites disappear in this way.

Re: LOUISIANA BAYOU HUNT - DATE SET - APRIL '08 !

Good story !! It's amazing how quick nature can take over something like that. Glad ya'll found it!

Good job!

Re: LOUISIANA BAYOU HUNT - DATE SET - APRIL '08 !

That is soooo sad. Relatives move away and the entire cemetery is forgotten. Thank goodness for you folks who go out and try to salvage what is there.

My good friend Terry, who will be cooking at the hunt, went to a relative's field (40-50 acres) and found his ancestors' headstones. Lying out in the field, no connection to the actual graves. He took them home with him, and it's so weird to see them sitting in his yard. He's trying to decide what to do with them. Totally disconnected from the bodies now.

Here's the cemetery that Noodle is talking about...

Re: LOUISIANA BAYOU HUNT - DATE SET - APRIL '08 !

Talking about TEACHERS PET HeHe! Will we see someone staying after class to clean erasers :laughing9: All I can say is way to go!

Re: LOUISIANA BAYOU HUNT - DATE SET - APRIL '08 !

Oh no. ::) I would never, ever think about sucking up to a good grade, let alone actually doing it. :angel12: But, the longer I can keep her occupied on something else, and I may string this one out for days, the less time she'll have for making up the test. And once she finds out who it is, she'll probably give me an "F" anyway, for hanging out with them.

I had told RR, that it was strange the way the conversation started with this guy yesterday and then going home and seeing the topic on the LBH post. Weird. We were talking about an old Hungarian Cemetary.

And, no I am not :icon_study: 'ing I HATE TO :icon_study: Ya'll Have a Blessed Day :icon_sunny:
