I found out that the mystery item in my post is a baby rattle after seeing one like it on another forum. After seeing the complete rattle I realized that the plastic ring I removed from it actually was part of the item. For some reason I wondered why someone would attach a nice sterling item to a plastic washer. I returned to the fire pit where I discarded my trash and I was elated that it was still there. Here are some pics of the complete baby rattle. Thanks for looking and HH

Thats a cool find..

That may not be plastic, but bakelite, a very early beginning to plastic. You probably quadrupled the value of your piece by finding that. Breezie probably can tell you all about it.

That's a cool peice.

You had a nice silver yr also.

I think the plastic ring is a "teething ring" very common in the UK, btw very nice find.

sweet. makes sense now. I found a sterling baby rattle once... it was shaped kinda like a bone with rattle things in each end. mine probably dates to the 30's, but it was damaged and is now in the scrap silver pile. glad you went back and got the ring.

Thanks for the additional photos. Really appreciated!!

When you think of it, it's really an odd find, in-as-much as you would normally expect
to find something of this nature in a families heirlooms. Also, the blank face(s) would
indicate that it was to be used for the babies name and DOB.

All in all, I love it. :headbang:

According to very little research, your plastic washer is imitation pearl. Whatever that is! Some kind of plastic/Bakelite. I saw some that looked just like yours but no one seems to no the exact age. Everything indicates that it was made between early 1900's and 1940's.
Just a really cool find. It had to be something very special to the family who owned it.
