Been detecting for about five weeks now. Was about ready to throw Excalibur out at first, but stuck with it. I would not give it up after a few weeks practice in the field. Found 289 coins so far, but no old ones till today. Found wheat penny and Buffalo nickel. Can't tell what year. Should I soak them in peroxide? Thanks to everyone at TreasureNet for all your informative posts. Will put pictures on if I ever get them clean.

PS - Wife thinks I am crazy keeping count of all the coins in an excel spread sheet.

Hey Bob,
Congrats on your first wheat and buff. Start detecting the wooded areas in some of your older parks and you'd be surprised at what you may find.
Good luck

Bob, I keep track of all of my finds on a spreadsheet as well. Logging all of your finds is part of the hobby.

Try the program Treasure Journal...it's a free download. If you don't like it you can always use your excel spreadsheet. Bob, I tried to e mail the program to you but my server rejected it for some reason.

A log is just part of the game if you are finding enough to log.

PS.....Sounds like you had a great time.
Bob there is an easier way to track. You can download Treasure Tracker 2.0
It is freeware and it tallies all of your finds for you automatically.

Love to see your pictures.

Here is a screenshot of the program with my current finds.

I also tried to download it. Like the idea of the percentages. Once you download and all the files are listed I ran set up. Now how do you open???

Click on Start Button, Then all Programs and then look for Treasure Tracker and click on it, then it will run.
Let me know if you need more help.

Here is another screen shot of what it might look like in your programs:

Hope that helps.

Congrats! there are many many ways to clean coins. I think the best way to clean my wheaties is to scrub them with a non-metal abrasive scrubber, and use Palmolive Oxy dish washing liquid. If the dirt still won't come off, I've found that if you put the penny into a potato for a few hours, that seems to take some, if not most, of dirt off as well. BUT....don't leave the coin in the potato for more than 24 hours, as it will begin to rust; at least thats been my experience. If you are able to, and you are home, check the penny every few hours until you are satisfied. Most of all, have fun, and happy hunting!!
