I’m heading back to an early 1800’s site this weekend. Normally my cellar holes have a degree of modern trash as they usually were occupied from 1850-1950. So I usually pass on 0-5 signals. Digging 2-5’s have always been flakes of copper, mason jar tin or more often foil.

At a truly clean site, with no occupation in the 1900’s, would digging 0-5 repeatable signals be worthwhile on a time constrained hunt? Anything interesting being dug this low? For me a small cuff sized flatbutton rings up 6-8.

Ummm, I’m really interested in where a $1 US gold coin rings up...

Thx!

U.S. $1 Gold Coin will ring up around 11, in an air test...

Thad, another detectorist I know let me swipe over his dug 1 dollar gold coin and it beeped exactly in the nickel range. IMO, if on a time crunch It's not in your best interest just because of the way the Equinox tends to sniff out those tiny shards of whatever may be there. If time were not an issue then sure dig em up. Most of my gold rings beep from tab to zinc penny.

At your site, with your time constraints, and probably history, I would ignore the lower tones. At the beach, I'd dig them. My two best ring finds (platinum with BIG diamonds worth $32K) read 2 on the Equinox.

I checked out relichound's post on his $1 US gold. It was shallow and read "12" according to his post. I dug everything "7" or above on my Nox and got some Indian trade items that way.

I have probably missed a couple of gold rings or something, but I generally dig 8 and above at clean colonial sites. Sometimes small flat buttons ring up around 8. Anything below 8 is usually flakes of copper, foil, or pieces of mason jar lids.

I just realized I posted the same things you did about TDI's. :laughing7:

I am really interested how you will ring up when you find a $1 US gold coin. Probably would hear you hooping and whooping three states away.

IMHO: If you have a standing permission, dug everything! Many targets are masked or are considered co-related targets and alter the VDI, again dig it all. :icon_thumleft:
