Relic Hunting
Hey guys,

Got a taste of winter today as sea spray from the choppy river splashed into the kayak at near freezing temps enroute to some productive Rev War sites. After Gheenoe's near perfect RP pewter button a few weeks ago, I can't help it but to put the site into my rotation every few weeks in the hopes another may be hiding below the mud.

Before I get to those digs, Darby was kind enough to invite me out for a hunt on Friday afternoon. The purpose of the trip was for me to hit his pounded sites and see if the extra depth of the CTX might turn up relics just outside the reach of his ole' faithful AT-PRO. Turns out he's done a pretty solid job clearing the sites, however I did manage to pull a few tombac partials, copper dandy, buckle fragments, and a thimble.

Not to shabby given the dozens of times he's combed over the sites.

Back to the lowcountry, I braved the cold and landed on the loyalist battery. The first dig was a roached copper coin, probably a KG3. Targets were few and far between, however I nearly had a heart attack when I zero'd in on the familiar sound of pewter. Dug the plug and stared in excitement at an intact, heavy pewter button.

Unfortunately, while a interesting pewter, this one is almost certainly of the civilian variety. "SOLID" is stamped around the perimeter so I am guessing it is very early 1800s rather than Rev War period. Among the other digs were 2 carved .69 round balls. One is hammered perfectly flat on the base with a square hole punched in the top...game piece perhaps?

I also managed to dig a 1700s pewter spoon, quite possibly used by the same Royal Provincials that lost Gheenoe's button :laughing7:

Among the other digs: small clock key, copper ship nails, colonial fishing weights, round balls, and 2 unknowns. The first is brass...kind of resembling a rabbit. The second is copper...no clue beyond that.

Hopefully get a few more digs before I publish my end of year post, but all in all a great December hunt. Happy holidays and thanks for looking!

Great hunt right there.

Real good hunt there Jon!
Is that spike made out of lead?
If so I just dug the same thing Friday. Have no clue what it could be used for?

Thanks George, saw you lead spike on the earlier post. This on is made of copper/brass so I suspect it was used on a ship.

Great pewter button! Sure that was a chilly boat ride this morning but definitely looks like it was worth it! Congrats on your finds and enjoyed the hunt Friday.

Thanks Darby, love digging those early pewters...not sure on the date of origin. May in fact be late 1700s but can't find a match online.

Great selection of finds, congrats. Liking the rabbit jobby.

Nice finds buddy. I guarantee that site has more rev war stuff hiding back in there. Now that it's getting cooler and the snakes and bugs are gone, we'll have to see about some more sites in the back country.

Nice hunt. You always find some interesting buttons and relics.

Very well done! I see the skeleton key... I've never found one, so they look really good to me!

Congrats finding more Carolina treasure.

Thanks Ryan, definitely up for scouting some new dirt.
