Thanks for all the replies!
My honey bought this coin from her brother to give to me for my Birthday
I may have it slabbed, but the coins i find are more sentimental to me than what
they are worth.
I don't figure it will go down in value!
Every coin i find takes me back in time, wondering what life was like back then
and who the person was that lost it.
Even though i didn;t find this coin,it is very special to me,and i will cherish it
throughout my life.

Again,i appreciate the replies and comments, and wish you all,the best of luck!
LabradorBob

I recently posted a topic in whats it worth on my brother-in-law finding
an 1870 seated liberty dollar.
its actually in better shape than the scanned photos,
weve been trying to figure out what it is worth,
since he needs the money badly.
from what ive seen in blue books and red books it starts at $400 to $600.
and goes up to$80.000.
there were 11,758 minted 1870 CC
looked on e-bayalready too, gonna take it and have it graded in springfield,mo maybe next weekend.
what are some of your opinions?
you guys are the real experts in my book.

Added a few more pics;I found out i could hold a jewelers lens to my camera lens and get closeups.

Re: Lucky brother-in-law

12,462 minted. I'd grade it EF-40 $1,100.

Re: Lucky brother-in-law

Real nice find!  You're probably at G-4 to G-6. The front takes away from value even though the back is about F-12. There are also scratches and a couple of deep gouges under the cap on the pole. (Sorry to pick apart your coin but you asked). Any coin dealer will want to make money so figure selling this for 1/2 or less than the Red Book to a dealer.( Blue Book is a dealer purchase guide). A collector may pay $200-$300. My educated guess. GOOD LUCK if you want to sell but, as I have learned, don't expect the higher range from anyone. :( I don't recommend a grading service either, as you may be even more disappointed. You don't see alot of Seated Dollars dug so I recommend you keep that Baby! "The Hogge"

Re: Lucky brother-in-law

This one looks awfully similar to yours and here's the auction results. "Lot # 2462
1870-CC Seated Liberty Silver Dollar. VF-20 (NGC).
Lot Information

Final Bid $1,380.00
Description: Steel-gray coloration dominates the outward presentation of this piece. Moderate wear appears throughout and although scattered abrasions dot both sides, none are individually mentionable.

PCGS# 6964."
From November 2007

Re: Lucky brother-in-law

Your brother-in-law certainly is lucky!!! That is one awesome coin. I would have a very hard time parting with that coin.

I wish him good luck, whatever his decision is.

Congrats!

Re: Lucky brother-in-law

VG-8 on a good day IMO. Nice find-everyone agrees.

Re: Lucky brother-in-law

That is a pretty rare coin. Several hundred dollars at least. 1868, 1869, 1870 and 1871 were low silver production years on the Comstock and coin mintage at Carson city was low. Most were rapidy turned through circulation in the old west and eventually became detailess "shinplasters."

Re: Lucky brother-in-law

How strong are the letters on the shield? According to Brown and Dunn, all seven letters of "Liberty" must show for a VF grade. For Fine, all seven letters will show, but L and I will be weak. I can't tell from the pic of the other coin, it must be a bad picture because NGC is a pretty good grading company.

Re: Lucky brother-in-law

Seems like ya got the info needed from the people on here, I agree with them, please keep us posted though on the out come..

Re: Lucky brother-in-law

I saved and photoshoped the pictures to help show what detail there is left. I am no expert in this series but I would tend to agree on the VG grade given. If there is any cleaning it will be noted by any of the top three grading companies. NGC will body bag the coin (Return it ungraded and take your fee), PCGS will just mark it genuine and ANACS will state any problems and give a net grade. I Personally would not send in any coin I had dug as chances of it being labeled a problem coin are high.

Re: Lucky brother-in-law

quite rare coin which works in your favor --its rarity well help its price somewhat if you got the time to auction it off via a auction house (of course the auction folks will get a big cut) due to scarcity with so few made and the fact that many were lost in action or wore totally out or in such bad shape that their hardly IDible -- thus even father reducing the amount of decent ones out there* it could fetch a good price but only if sold to the right collector * ---- that said local coin dealer folks tend to be greedy and tight fisted-- buy low & sell high is their motto -- if buying coins they will nit pick and beat down and low ball very hard grade em --if selling they will soft grade the same coin-- but hey thats how they make a living off the differance between buying and selling.

as far as $$$$ value goes -- I have a very old saying my grandpappy told me ----its worth as little as you will take for it and as much as they will give for it ---once those two meet -- thats what its worth cash moneywize.
