Lyme's Disease - get yourself checked

Yep, if you're in the woods in Deer Tick areas get checked. Not sure? Try this canine map and Click the Lyme's link - yep, it's pretty hilarious using a dog map but it's actually the best measure out there of Lyme's presence.

Map of ticks and diseases ? dogs and ticks

I found out Wednesday I contracted it for the third time. It was early thanks goodness. I told my buddy and he says he may have it. I ain't stopping digging, tired or not, so plan on seeing a post of mine again soon;)

Last Saturday I went hunting with Loco Digger and EastCoastDigger. I was dragging ass and now I know why.

Anyway, here are few maps of the East Coast:

Stay safe out there. If you're not sure and feel fatigued, get tested. It's easy.

Good digs everyone

Steve

Sorry to hear you got Lymes. Seems to be much more common lately or maybe they are just better and diagnosing it. It's a wonder that I haven't contracted it as many ticks as I've pulled off my body. I have been treating my clothes with Permithrin the last couple years and it really does reduce the number of ticks that I find after a deep woods hunt. You can watch a tick get on your treated clothes and they definitely try to get away from it. Here is a link for it. If you detect in the woods or brush you really need this:

My buddy went out last week to a spot by the river, found a nice silver Rosie, then found forty plus ticks on him. I may have posted this, but updating, he did not find them all. My dog had one crawling on her from his couch. I had one from the couch and one from his car. Thanks for the thread Scrappy.

Permethrine has been my choice for repelling to ticks. It works great. Brad likely has it. When he was up here he decided to take his ticks out for sushi. After a nice dinner and a beer he slept with them....some sorta weird threesome I guess. Then he was nice enough to shower with them in the morning before kicking them out of his room. What a night lol

I hope for a full and speedy recovery for you, Scrappy. Good advice to always check for ticks. I had Lymes years back - what a bear. Only had one outing this Spring here in CT where the deer ticks were really bad. I probably had 40 on me and I was only in the wooded section for about 15 minutes. Hopefully this warmer weather will knock them down for awhile... but then they will be back.

Thanks for reminding us all of the seemingly innocent forage through the woods that many of us enjoy. I believe if you are hunting in an area where deer live,, you just increased your chances of a tick bite 100 fold. I have been lucky so far with the ticks but not so lucky with the mosquitoes. I'll be sure to spray.

Sorry to hear that there are folks here who contracted something from ticks. It's a serious problem. My cousin got Lyme from her dog whom she brought him indoors after she noticed he was terribly sick. The dog died. She left that dog outside permanently, and no one bothered to check it for ticks. It's not safe to leave dogs outside full time anymore.

To those who believe you won't get ticks from a manicured lawn, that is not correct. I have been out in the woods and not gotten any ticks, but I have gotten a tick a few times while mowing my grass. You are not safe anywhere outdoors.

This is a great post Steve. I bring it up every year at our club. My wifes best friend died from lyme disease 13 years ago. She was a champion horse breeder who had been bitten by a tick. When she started to feel ill, the Doctors did their tests, and misdiagnosed her with Lou Gehrigs disease, ( which is a common mistake because it can pose the same symptoms ). They then flew her to one of the best Lyme Doctors in the country out in Massachusetts & thats what he diagnosed her with. He put her on very heavy antibiotics but it was to late. She died a week later. Of course all of this took place over some time. It wasnt as quick as my story makes it sound. Glad your going to be ok, and heres to a speedy recovery.

Dang Scrappy you looked like you were doing fine last weekend, you certainly covered a lot of ground swinging that CTX, I didn't see you as being tired. Hope you can get through this. I never found a tic on me when we hunted, but I did find one in the Acadia that must have been crawling on me. It was on the inside walking on the windshield. Needless to say he is no longer alive. I know they were real bad in Horsham area in April.

Wow this thread took off. I'm glad people are chiming in.

Loco, last weekend I was struggling bro. Caffeine and relative "youth" we're keeping me chipper, but looks can be deceiving. I was wiped out. This weekend I'm just sitting on the couch. Don't feel much like detecting. Maybe I'll just watch a bunch of tnetters on YouTube all wknd.

Cheers

This has got to be the best bet to lower the chance of ticks. I have not found one tick on me since I have been using this product. I spray certain clothes I wear only for detecting, and knock on wood have never got a tick. Hope it stays that way.
Cutting the grass in my own yard wearing other clothes, and I have had 2 ticks so far.

I know there are people out there that don't think to highly of this product (the active ingredient), and I have done a lot of research on it before I started buying it. Id rather be wearing clothes with this all over them, than have to worry about ticks that might possibly be carrying a disease that can screw you up bad.

Hope you have a speedy recovery Scrappy.

I feel for you. I hope the meds work well and that you have a full and speedy recovery. I recommend a good probiotic formula while your on the antibiotics. It really makes a world of difference in how you feel while on the meds and how well you rebound after you're finished you last cycle.

I live in MD and it's very bad here. I had Lyme twice; the first time it was misdiagnosed for 6 months and by then I was SO sick I literally thought I was dying. Death would have been a huge relief at that point. My face was paralyzed from Belle's palsy and I was walking around looking like a stroke victim. My eyes became so misaligned that I was seeing double. It took a couple of weeks for my vision to get back to seeing only one of everything I looked at.

Thank GOD I FINALLY found a Dr. that recognized the problem and started treatment immediately after a half dozen trips to the ER and a barrage of tests. He even brought in about 6 young interns to show them what a serious case looked like. Here I was lying on the table in pure misery wearing nothing but a pair of boxers and I didn't give a damn who was looking at me. I just wanted some relief.

The upside is, once the antibiotics began to work I started improving very quickly. I was told that other than the infection, I was actually very healthy and it worked in my favor. If you're not healthy and contract Lyme it can become a life long disability.

Another thing which I believe you touched on, is that the Doxycycline is the "go to" treatment for Lyme. Unfortunately, the price has increased by almost a hundred fold since my first bout with the disease. Amoxicillin is still really cheap and it will kill the Lyme bacteria; you just need to take more of it and for longer cycles. My first Doxy treatment took three 21 day cycles to "cure" me. The second time the Amoxicillin took two cycles. Thankfully I recognized the symptoms immediately the second time and started treatment right away.

Lyme is a filthy scourge that ANYONE who ventures outdoors needs to REALLY be aware of and take very seriously. You DO NOT want to catch this stuff; I can tell you that. It's extremely nasty and virulent and if left untreated, will make you choose death over living with it. That's how sick you can get.

I've suffered from migraines my entire life (which are treatable) but they are NOTHING compared to the SEVERE, constant, never ending headache from Lyme disease that no amount of any narcotic on Earth will even touch; not to mention the excruciating pain in every joint, nausea and an overall "flu like" feeling that never ends. It's truly THAT bad. I was on Morphine (among other things) for the pain and it did absolutely nothing at all for that headache. I just cannot stress enough how horrible it can get.

Once you get it, you'll test positive for it the rest of your life due to the antibodies you make. As a result, many people are treated time and time again unnecessarily. Also, the test itself regularly produces false positives as well as false negatives. The disease can mimic MS, Lupus, Crone's disease, rheumatoid arthritis and a few other autoimmune diseases and ailments. You need a Dr. that KNOWS about Lyme (a "Lyme Literate Dr"; or LLD) and believe it or not, many do not.

A bulls eye rash SOMETIMES appears and sometimes it doesn't. It can appear at the site of the bite or anywhere BUT the bite site. If you see a bulls eye rash anywhere on your person, do NOT wait. Go get treatment. Ignoring Lyme can ruin your entire life and in many cases, it can ruin it for years to come.

In my case, I'm very healthy but after Lyme I have lost a bit of my mental sharpness and clarity. I call it "brain fog". My focus isn't as good as it used to be and the muscles around my eyes were damaged permanently. I need reading glasses to see up close now. Before Lyme I had better than 20/20 vision.

So yeah, don't ever fool around when it comes to Lyme and tick bites. If you think you have been bitten, get checked out and take the medicine. Yeah, antibiotics are a double edged sword that can wreck your gut, cause thrush and numerous other side effects like very serious rashes and destroy your good bacteria but that can be easily replaced with good probiotics and proper food.

Also keep in mind that although Lyme is definitely carried by Deer ticks; it's also carried by other types of ticks along with any number of nasty co infections. They are filthy creatures. I never believed it until it happened to me so take my word for it; you DO NOT want to EVER catch this disease.

And of course, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Knowledge is power so just be aware and stay aware. If you go into the fields and woods ( which applies to pretty much everyone here), make sure you protect yourself. You'll be glad you did.

Oh I forgot it's not just the deer tick that carries lymes now,dog tick and several other creepy crawlers..
God speed on your recovery.

Luckily Lyme's Disease is very uncommon where I live. However, it can happen. I'm always on the lookout for ticks, and I pay attention to possible symptoms.

I have a dear family friend whose life was severely hampered by the disease, after 20 years of not being treated. It always reminds me to be careful.

Thanks for the info Scrappy

Hey thanks man. I just want to clear up any misinformation. I'm not a doctor, so I Rely on the CDC for my information.

According to them the only blacklegged tick (Deer Tick) can transmit the bacteria that causes Lyme's disease.

http://www.cdc.gov/lyme/faq/index.html

That's not to say there is not a myriad of other bacterias carried by other types of ticks, because there are. They can all be equally destructive to the human body.

Sorry to hear your sick. F'N ticks. I spray my cloths with deep woods off, so far I've only found a couple on my pants this year. I try to check often when I detect in the woods or around weeds.

Lyme's is no joke, get better brother, God speed.

Hope you make a full and complete recovery scrappy!

Not sure i can use the strong stuff, but i can slather on tea tree oil...just may keep the public away when i'm detecting. Win-Win!

So far this year all i've "aquired" is a rash from poison oak.

Dang Steve, that sucks. I always wear clothes treated with permethrin and I always have my wife check me over thoroughly when I get home....I check her over too for good measure [emoji6]

About time they admit there are herbal remedies that work

Haha, yeah nothing turns on the fairer sex more than a stinky guy full of ticks and dirt!

I actually picked up a 6-pack of permethrin spray cans from Amazon for $30. A single can of the same exact stuff was $12 so I figured I'll use it eventually.
