I found this at a park in Bangor, Maine that used to have a school on it. It was down about 8" and back under a tree root. There were only 50,028 minted in 1920. 28 of those were for the treasury department and were later destroyed. Thanks for looking and HH! That is a very unique find! I didn't even know that they existed...and a nice hunk of silver to boot... Congrats staninbji!!!
Cheers from Mass.

Very nice coin. Sounds like it's pretty rare too! Congrats!

What a great find!

I've seen them at coin shows and in the Red Book, of course, but to dig one is unheard of (literally, because I have not heard of one being dug until this one).

Former sight of Dow Lane Elementary School?

Nice one! I'd love to find a silver commemorative someday. BTW, I don't live near Maine, but spent a few days in Bangor a few years ago, and may have detected the park you are referring to. Found a couple of mercs and a copper but nothing that sweet.

Silver?
hilarious
Hilarious? You've got a strange sense of humor. Most of the silver coinage that I've found is shiny and bright. Maybe one out of four has some form of tarnish on it.
