Making a probe???

I have gotten word on the where abouts of a really old bottle dump as well as some outhouses and a well. I think about the only way I will be able to locate these places is with a good probe. What is the best way to make a probe that will get at least 4 to 5 feet down? I was told some folks use Bois De Arc to make hollow handles that amplify the sound when they hit something with the probe.
