still can not find out what this is it is non magnet rings up as silver on 350 is two inches long and 11/4 inch wide. only had tested at one lab and they say it is 99% manganese
but I do not know how it got here to a field in NC when I found it it was covered with soot.

Interesting find JR, I think Todd's right!

Manganese is used in modern steel production and can also be used to case harden softer steel. Crushed into powder the red hot metal can either be dusted or immersed in the dust and then quenched in an oil bath used motor oil and diesel (50/50). Using this method you can make tools hard enough to dig in hard soils that won't break off because the core is a more pliable material.
