manganese ?

FOUND THIS LAST YEAR had a lab look at it they say it is 99% manganese this was found on a plantation that dates back to 1712 when I found it it was covered with soot. it is about 2"long by 1 1/2 " wide. there was a blacksmith shop on the property, but not near my find. if it is manganese how did it get in this form, not normal in nature. has anyone ever seen something like this?
