Ridley and I were detecting an area today that used to have an old road from the 1600's-1800's.
It was used by Sherman and troops on their way to the Bentonville Battlefield. Very historic area.
Anywho, I dug this old button today and was wondering if anyone could ID it for me?
It is 20mm (flat front) and I can make out "MASSA?C?????" along the bottom of the back of the button.
I think the first word (company?) on the top may start with the letter "O"?
Any ideas what I found?
Company?
Circa?
Thanks,
MM

Could it be Massachusetts ?

That's what I'm thinking Gypsy. I couldn't find it in my button books.
Hopefully someone can figure it out. ;)
Thanks,
MM

Re: Massachusetts Button ***UPDATE*** ID found

I was finally able to get an ID on the button I dug last week thanks to a referral by PBK.
PBK told me to get in touch with button expert Warren Tice which I did.
Thanks PBK.

Here is what Warren has to say about the button:
Hi Doug: Thanks for writing about that button. I believe that the backmark is in two concentric rings. The outer ring, which is a shallow impression, should read "STRONG FOREVER." The inner ring, which is strongly raised and shown in your photo, reads "OLD MASSACHUSETTS." The button was a political campaign token for Caleb Strong (1745-1819) who served two terms as governor of Massachusetts. The button probably dates ca. 1810-1819. Strong was an opponent of the War of 1812 and refused to send the state militia to the army. Look hard for the "STRONG FOREVER" inscription after cleaning the button. Hope this helps. Regards, Warren Tice

That's why I love finding old buttons. There's so much interesting info behind them.
Thanks for looking,
MM
