Massive Wheat Penny Score!

Today may be my single greatest find to date. And it's not even Silver. I went into a bank and showed some of my buddies the nice AU 1958-D Wheat I had pulled from a Penny box about 2 days ago. To which the girl said they had a lot of them. It turns out, someone's Dad died and the clueless heir cashed in 70 Wheats 1940 and earlier into the bank. As much as we all love Silver, there's more to CRHing than just Silver.





Complete Breakdown. When I say all of a year, I mean one each of Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. The fact that there are no duplicates in 70 coins shows just how much of a collector this dead man was:

They're your coins, so do as you wish. Depending on condition, the 1911-S may be worth more than the $50. Throw in the '14-S and the VDB, and those 3 coins alone might fetch $100+ retail...again depending on condition.

Lookin' for copper is what got me started collectin' pennies. Now I've got two Danscos that I'm tryin' to fill. I get more enjoyment from pennies than anything else.

I agree with goldman, That is a huge start. I went and bought $25 worth of CWR pennies today just bc of this post. Pennies is what started it all for me

You've got a huge start on a Lincoln Wheat collection, and got it at face.

A Lincoln Wheat collection is certainly impressive, but I'm wondering what the point of trying to amass a complete set of any kind of coin is. Is there some kind of premium you can get for a full set or something? I'm personally happy with just one of a coin from every year, since it was just 7 months ago that I found out what a mintmark was. Not to mention, a full collection would require the infamous 1909-S VDB, which is way more than I ever want to spend on any one coin(unless it was gold or something). I am happy though that there are enough full set collectors to put some serious value behind some of my Wheat finds.

Since I am working feverishly to remove as much copper as I can from circulation I feel it is my duty to at least preserve as complete a sampleing of the history of the cent as I can. Looking for hole fillers is just another way to make CRHing more fun for me.
