Material identification help

can you post a picture of the whole stone? Might be easier to identify.

Sure the reason i didnt before.i didnt want the item to maybe sway the opinion.

Is it stone? The only stones I could find similar were granite, quartzite, or marble

That is the question i believe it is.Ive been told by an archeologist he thinks its slate but he only had pictures.Another told me bone or antler.But do to its age it shouldnt be here.Our soils eat it up in around 100yrs

You could try a hardness test and scratch test to see atleast what the yields

Yeah ive also heard the hot needle test.Its near 4,000 yrs old pretty reluctant to do any poking or prodding.

Maybe take it to your local college and see if they could tell what it is?

Ive been invited to have it looked at by an archeologist at his lab at the maine state museum.will eventually....
