MDs without stands

I think this question is going to sound very stupid.

Recently I purchased a MXT, and it arrived today. Before getting the MXT I had owned a metal detector with the control box on top and a stand underneath the part where you put you arm.

When digging do I set the MXT on the ground or do I hold the control box off of the ground while I dig? I tried holding the MXT with my left hand while I cut a plug, but I found this not to be very easy. Maybe I was holding it wrong, or I was haveing difficulty, because it was cold and windy out. Right now the ground is muddy so I assume that I defenitly should hold it while digging. There is no Metal detecting club near me, and I don't remember ever seeing anyone use a MD with a control box on the bottom(MDs don't seem to be very popular where I live).

Thanks for the information Bowman. I can't believe that I didn't think to check out White's accessories. Guess I'm just too excited about getting the MXT to think properly.

On my white's I use a nylon clamp-on rifle bipod that I got from an Army surplus store a few years ago. It works well except when wading through heavy brush or vines. I think it cost about 6 bucks.

steve p - a few years ago the stand on my 5900 broke. i looked for several weeks until i found a white's dealer that had one. he gave it to me. i,m sorry to tell tou but i think it was the last one ever made - but i don't need another one right now. you might look at some camera accessories, there seems to be a lot of camera equipment that consists of clamps going around rods and "T" bars etc. maybe you could jury rig up something for your unit. wayne

Another great idea as a stand when needed I have used an old "weedeater" holder, can be found in Walmarts around the weedeaters area. They can put on the bottom of the pole on your detector and will keep it up and clear.

my XLT came with 2 rubber feet that Whites use for a detector stand, They just stick on and should work on any machine. They only hold the box off the ground or whatever about 3/4 of an inch, which is enough unless in mud or tall wet grass, then in that case it would take a stand 2 to 3 inches tall. HH Scotty

The mxt also had the two rubber feet. They seem to work ok on the dry ground. Became better at holding the mxt today while digging so I might wait on the stand. Thanks everyone for the help though. TimeDog, I'll check out the weedeater holders next time I'm at Wal-Mart, for incase I need one when it becomes muddy again.

MXT Overload

I have one more question about the MXT. Is it normal for the MXT to overload sometimes on surface targets that aren't very big? It overloads a lot on targets like cans, and capri sun, but I figured that it was normal because of their size and the fact that they are mostly on or near the surface. While MDing today my mxt went over a pin (about 1 1/4" in diameter)on the surface and overloaded(I can't remember if it was while detecting or when I pinpointed). The reason I wondered if this was normal is because the pin was not much bigger than a Quarter. I usuially keep the gain at 5 but go up to 9 every once in awhile(don't remember the exact setting when this happened). I'm guessing that it might have been because it was on the surface and I pinpointed. I'll see if it acts up tomarrow on small surface targets without pinpointing, and with the gain lowered. Will post again on this topic tomarrow if it still acts up.
