Meet other MN Hunters

Hey Sniffer, I lived near slayton as a kid, in a little almost dead town named Iona. In fall of 1970 I returned to Iona on a weekend while attending tech school in Alexandria. Went on a hay ride that weekend, and lost my class ring somewhere around town. I would love to find it. It may have already been found years ago, is in someones drawer, jewelry box, or part of a new ring? I plan on returning to Iona sometime this summer. I used to do yard and garden work when I lived there, for elderly people. Once while doing some hoeing for a lady in her garden, I found several coins, one that was about the size of a silver dollar( time has faded my memory here some), that was a flowing bust style, with stars around the outside of coin. The lady I worked for, kept it. I cant help feeling there may be more there? So going to make it a metal detecting trip, and visit old friends trip, maybe look for my class ring? NOt much chance I will find it, but will make a good trip. Also may metal detect the old house I used to live in, along with a couple other places I remember. Good luck to you in Slayton.

I drove thru beautiful downtown Iona last Sunday on way home to Renville County. Visited relatives in Wilmont area and detected a couple of parks in Hadley and Leota. Drove by the little park in Iona where I picked up a few coins about 4 years ago, but it was late in the day, so I didn't stop there.

I'm from Litchfield and would love to get together if a group forms to hunt in the area. I'll try to check this forum occasionally. I did find a few winged mercury head dimes, an indian head penny, and a buffalo nickel the last couple weeks. Had much better luck after the rain of course.

Luckymin, I drive down from the St Cloud area and detect with a guy (Jeff) around Litchfield who lives S W of Lk. Ripley. Sorry, I can't remember his screen name, but he's a cool guy. Maybe he'll see this post and 3 of us could get together in the Litchfield area in the future. Goose-O/Cy

Goose and Luckymin, I'd be up for some detecting around here in the near future. I have been VERY busy with
work lately and could use a break. :help: LM, let us know what dates/times would work for you and we'll try and
get something set up -- it would be fun.

Hey, count me in on a Litchfield hunt. I checked my records and found 33 coins at the city park there and and another 34 at something called Legion Field. I remember I found a half dollar and a couple of wheats out in centerfield. This was in 2004, so I haven't been thru there for awhile. Are there any public beaches on Lake Ripley ?

Hello from SW Minnesota

Hello all,
Very new to metal detecting, but having fun! I've only been doing it for a couple weeks. I live in Marshall, MN. I just dropped a private message to Cottonjim in Cottonwood, but it appears he has been inactive on the forums for a while, so I don't know if he will see it or not. Would like to find others in the area.

Best wishes!
-Mike-

Welcome! Too bad you weren't digging when Marshall's main street was torn up a couple of summers ago. I was driving through and spent an hour hunting there, but didn't find anything worth mentioning.

Only an hour? Maybe a little longer would have produced some goodies. Heck, I once was out for 2 1/2 hrs and found just one zincoln. But, the oppotunity to detect is all I need whether I find anything or not.

I was there during the street tearup and didn't spend a lot of time there also and found nothing there. I had the best luck just a couple of blocks away where Schwan's bought up a square block that had 3 old houses on it and they bulldozed them all down. I think only one of them had a basement. Didn't find anything older than modern clad though. If I didn't live so far away, I would have liked to have been there when they scraped it down. It is now a nicely landscaped asphalt parking lot.
I almost met up with Cottonjim about that time also. Haven't talked to him since.

Hello out there I just got into MDing this year and have hit a few local parks. Nothing special a few
dollars in change and a couple pounds of aluminum and other junk! I am retired/disabled but not
old! JUST not able to get around real fast. I thought/found this is a good way to get more exercise
and take my mind off of other things. I have a BH Landstar that I am still trying to figure out but
am hopefull to get some more MDing in before the BIG freeze! See you all around! :headbang:
ps I live in Moorhead MN.

Sven, I'm tied up for the next 3 months, but after winter, I'll post here and maybe visit you for a little 'tectin' (The 'cool' way to say detecting.) Goose

New to this page but I've been on Tnet for about a year. My first and olny detector is a fisher F2. I love it. I bought it from a fellow member of tnet and live's close to my area. I was bidding out the difference between the Ace-250 and the F2 and I couldn't pass up the deal George gave me. (Thanks George) Well I've found 6 ring's a bunch of wheaties a couple of rosie's a merc, and a comm silver coin. Seeing I'm in the Landscaping field I have had several chances to check out site's and by far by best site has been in St. Paul at an old established park. Their I found an old House Tag with the number and Builder on the tag. That was my best find so far.

I try to get out and check different park's in the area but I love the older area's even if I'm using a cheap detector. I have found it to be better then the Ace-250 because my sister and her boy friend bought them and I have been out doing them on a 5-1 ratio. But it could be because of my knowledge... Well if your looking for a partner to do some hunting let's chat.

I would really like to visit Murphy's Landing in Shokopee!!! Is that off limit's?

Twin Digger, so you live in the Twin Cities area eh? Who knows, come spring I might pay you a visit for some detecting. I have a daughter living in Minneapolis, so I'll kill 2 birds with one stone.......detecting in your area and then sponge a dinner off of my daughter in the evening. I'm tied up now with waterfowl & deer hunting on weekends 'til mid December.

Well You'll have to let me know next year when a good time would be.. Sound's like a plan.

Have a good-one

Got out for a half hour to a field across the street from my house only made it to 40 or so today. During the winter they dump snow there so I am always finding stuff mostly junk but today pulled a quarter and a dime both from the 70's. I found a nice camping knife this spring during the thaw in that area! I carry it when MDing now. Hope the weather holds off for a bit longer. I''m NOT ready for winter this year since summer never really came.

I am new (again) to the metal detecting forum....I am in the Faribault/Owatonna area of Minnesota. Anyone know of some good areas to hunt around here?

MNcricket, what town do you live closer to? I'm a ghost town hunter (New Mexico mostly) and I have some old Minnesota maps. I just looked at a 1925 original Minn. hwy map and it shows many towns around your area that AREN'T on modern maps. Now some of these towns might have been just 2 or 3 farm houses at a road intersection or ? (Near where I live, there is a 'town' called '5 corners'......all that is there is a farm house.....and the intersection is only 4 corners....an intersecting road was eliminated some 45 yrs ago)

Fairbault and Owatonna are about 15 miles apart and there are a lot of towns in between/around Fairbault and Owatonna that are NOT on modern maps and are shown on old maps.

You got to love this weather.... Stopped me again. I hope to get George out if the weather turns out better in the next week or so.
Where can you get copies of older maps? I'm having a tough time finding them...
Thanks for any help I can get.

Happy Hunting
