Spent my last few hunts at a place that the youngest coin I've found has been an 1822 large cent. Hardly any modern trash, I think I'm at 3 cans and a pull tab over 12 hours of hunting. I've been itching to see what the first silver coin is going to be. Towards the end of my last trip I got that killer high 80's signal and I just knew. What I pulled out was disappointing to say the least. I'm pretty sure I've got two coins melted together although there is a bit of extra mass in the middle.
Anyone ever found anything like this? Is it wishful thinking to say these are two melted coins? They are slightly smaller than half dollars but bigger than quarters. I'm trying to at least define the denomination of coin they are, as a challenge. Should I expect their weight to be a good measurement of what they were or would that be effected by the burning/melting process? I've also heard of using tin foil and baking soda to remove tarnish, any experience with this and burnt coins? Any guesses or advice in honing in on what denomination these are/were is greatly appreciated!
