Merc, 2-ringer, 4 wheats! -- first '10 silvery treat for me !

Hi all,
Had a fun hunt in the woods with Makton today. It was frustrating for the first 3 hours, only got a 2-ringer 3 hours into hunt. But by hour four -- 1st silver of 2010 for me. I also got 4 wheats -- '12, '29, '40-d, 42. I also ran across a plaque on a tree that said someone's ashes (1945-2009) were dumped there b/c it was his boyhood home. -- Don't worry none of my treats came from him as he was 1/2 mile from all my finds.

Can anyone tell me about this? rough date, etc. Sorry I did not give measure in photo. 2 ringer, bullet does not appear to be round but kind of polygonal. Rough date? Maybe it can go with my pistol. Thanks!

Sweet silver!!
Sounds like a good spot for your future hunts.

On your bullet. . . usually the octagonal grooving indicates it might be old.
If you can get a rough diameter of that slug, we might be able to narrow it's age.

Nice hunt

Mark et al,
The bullet is roughly 16 mm long, the width at the base is 8.5 mm. The base is flat (not concave like I've seen on some 3 ringers people have posted.

Great hunt, Jon!!!

You guys out there braving the mud & puddles today! Silver hard earned, plus a bullet that looks like an old Heinz ketchup bottle!

Congrats!

Sweet! Silver is singing early this year!

Sounds like you might have a .38 special/.357 cal bullet there. The flat base indicates cased ammo most likely. Not necessarily old, but very preferreable to finding one in flight!

Octagonal or polygonal shape may be from a black powder modern type weapon or a real old weapon. I've never seen a modern standard bullet without rifling and a round shape except for a black powder type. Rifling will leave spinning typegrooves on the bullet Rifling in the barrel is used to spin the bullet to stabilize it in flight and it leaves grooves in the bullet. Each weapon's barrel leaves unique marks on the bullet, front to back. Its like a fingerprint and can be matched to a particular barrel, thus to the particular weapon which fired it. I think rifling came into existence before the civil war, first in cannons. It increased distance and accuracy. But as usual, I've been wrong in the past. lol.

I don't think it came from that neat pistol you found. Modern 9mm, .38 and .357 cal are about what you measured at 8.5mm, just a tad bigger. But its a great find none the less. I was lucky enough to find a 3 ringer in the field which used to be a farm long ago. Only a couple hundred yards from my house.

Jon,
Great job on the silver. My finds ended up being a 48 Jefferson and a 50 wheatie along with Al Capones cufflink.
The best part of the hunt was watching you pull up in your car and get out wearing the Superhero
suite from that video you made.

Are you sure Kimsdad said you can borrow it?

That's why I was the one that walked away with silver instead of a nickle. The cod area is really helpful for storing the good finds.

p2c,

That's a nice silvery treat you've got there! Wish I could have gotten out Sunday.

I'd also like to thank you for introducing me to xtranormal.com (sarcasm). I spend hours at night making robots curse and Lego people fart and rub their stomachs. My fiance is only slightly amused by it all.
