howdy all, its MA_hunter001 here, and while on my metal detecting excersions :), I stumbled upon an old wagon road. I detected it for about 2 weeks, and came up with an IH penny, button/metal piece from a wagon, and a musketball. I wanted to detect there again, but when I end up going i don't really know where to hunt. I was wondering where the best place to hunt would be?? (On the side of the road or in the middle.) I would say the road goes for about 2 miles, and there's many interconnecting trails. I really don't know how to hunt the trail, in means of where to hunt; on or off the trail or where to start? Any info would be AWESOME!!

There are some open clearings, which i tried to check out but there too over grown. The trail is actually across from an old cemetary and farm house. (I would never hunt the cemetary!!!)
I followed the path for about a good mile, and the dirt path turned into a walking trail, covered with moss/grass. The path actually looked used. Thats where I found the musketball.
Any help on this would be great!!

I also have a question about celler holes, and old foundation holes. I went for a little drive and found a foundation hole/celler hole off to the side of the road. (The property is actually for sale, to build houses on). The hole is filled with old junk, the walls I would say are about...3-4 feet high made of stones stacked on each other. After walking around the property, i found a well across from the foundation hole, pieces of pottery/bricks, and trees with barbed wire through them. When hunting foundation holes, where fo you start?? :-\
Any info would be greatly appericaiated!!

PS I'm heading out this friday to hit up a 1800 farm house , which I've been detecting on and off for a month now. found a good deal of stuff. I'll bring my camara and post my finds.

Hey Steve,
sounds like a good spot. you should come on over to the Massachusetts board, a bunch of us may try to get together once more before the winter, and then again in the spring...

As far as hunting the trail, think of where you might have walked while traveling the road. About all over, right. The sides that are overgrown might not have been then. Those clearings could have been good spots, but you can't let a little brush slow you down. First try a small coil to get around the brush to test out the site before you start wackin' down the growth.

As for hints on how to check out old foundations, you need to do tons of research this winter on the how's and why's from the many books that are offered in the Treasure Magazines. Also start subscribing to them for the knowledge.

Good Luck,
Sandman
