Foundling this in Massachusetts in a river which go thru a revolutionary era area
I think it might be a handle to a stove flue damper ...its heavy piece and has not been cleaned
There are no house near where it was found and just outside of historical land boarder where detecting is not prohibited...if it's anything cool would like to give it to the historical society in that area ..thank you for your help

This piece seems so familiar.

Ditto, I'm staring at this thing thinking I know what this is........

First thought was a fixed sling attachment, but appears to be too dang big. Then I thought maybe a finial for a hanging lamp/light or for a lantern.......

Looks a bit like a rein terret.

But that bend... that is what makes me "familiar" with it and its bothering me now. heh

I've been way off on a couple that caught my eye and I'm glad I didn't even post my guess on...
But sometimes I have to take the fatal plunge.

Now the o.p.'s pic. looks like the top of a lynch pin.
But why the shaft is so short unless it's been fractured or deliberately cut cleanly somehow. And lynch pins shouldn't shear so clean in use.
Ahh well...

I think it is a door handle from a teens vintage center door Model T. The curve in the handle is pretty unique to these early automobile door handles. The square part that extends through the door is broken off of your find. The photo I found is from a 1916 car.ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1592927755.840471.webp

Good idea, desertexplorer.
Check out 1927 Packard as a possible match ?
