I tried filing it to expose the interior matrix of the metal, but my file didn't cut it. I read that a diamond file works well. Is there anything else that will easily cut iron?

Die grinder with thin cut-off abrasive wheel? Worth a try on the edge because of curiousity.

I cant even tell you how many of those i have foind enuff to fill my pockets several times. I seem to find them more often in the sand on the bay or river i have been told it is industrial waste slag from all the ore melting .the tristate area is prime for slag pieces they dumped all there garbage in raritan river and hudson river so kind of makes sense.
