I was detecting in the woods finding a lot of bullets and I ran across this rock that showed up in the 60's on my AT Pro. I'm not 100% sure of the number, but if its important I can recheck it. Anyway I brought it home and washed it off, and tested it with a magnet. The magnet did stick to it but it was a very weak attraction. It is also heavier than it looks. I read online that I should try to make marks on the back of a ceramic tile with the rock and it did not leave any marks. Lastly I used a grinding wheel to shave on it a little bit revealing this shiny goodness. I'm not sure what I've got. Meteorite? Not a meteorite? Not enough info? If it is a meteorite how much is it worth? I just signed for a house lol! Thanks for the help and as always happy hunting!

IMO
Any meteorites I've seen, are, black, burnt due to the high heat on entry to earth
Just saying

Ok, I found this example on eBay. Looks very similar to mine. I'm going to try and have it tested at Virginia Tech.

NOT a meteorite. Just so you know, you can have a thousand of those "Center for Meteorite Studies" cards printed for $9.99.. :skullflag:

It looks more like a chunk of gold to me, mixed with other mineral(s), of course, looking at your pictures. Maybe try the acid test? Curious by how heavy you say and the obvious (color).

it weighs 48 grams. It has a brownish color with some orange/redish coloration in spots.

Be sure to let us know what the Geology Department at VT tells you. :occasion14:

Would ya take a picture of it with a quarter next to it so we can get a better idea of the size of it?

Did you sign for the house immediately after you found it? ( Oh boy, I hope it's a super rare meteorite then)

I took it to a family member that works at VT. I'll try and get another picture of it with a quarter, but if you rounded off the corners it would be a little bigger around than a quarter.

Speaking of corners, they seem too sharp to be a meteorite.

lol no we signed Friday, thought a rare space rock would help tho! Seems like the consensus here is that it is not a meteorite, and that may be so. Just had some strange properties, like if it was a chunk of metal then why when I used the grinder on the edge the whole side didn't end up being metal? And the weight, magnetic properties etc. Nothing like anything I've found before for sure. I'll keep you posted. If I can't get it looked at, at Virginia Tech I have a friend that is a professor at Arizona State. One way or another I'll find out what it is.
