I only did this once when I visited my brother in NM. where he does it all the time. He says since most are easier to find out in the sticks, any detector with a large coil and hunt in All metal finds them. I didn't though.

Thanks.

In my 'pinion, whatever is best on depth - large coil...all metal. All detectors will find them, but depth is important. Remember to take your magnet and magnifier with you.

I have always wondered... are they a regional thing? Would one stand a chance finding one in Fl.?

Sure you could find one in Flordia or anywhere for that matter. It is just easier out in a desert where there had not been many people that deposit trash. Maybe one of all those hot rocks I have dug up over the years might be one as I wouldn't know one if I saw it. :read2:

On the show they where using f-75's for a reason ;)

Got to tell you, I am hooked.

The price of mini meteorites etc is huge....

Who knows which MD is the best for finding iron-nickel gold?

I also wouldn't know if I found one. I do know that I have found rocks that make my detector sing and I have thrown them away....I won't do that anymore....HH

Any rock that's heavier than it should be, or that's magnetic, or sets off your detector, don't throw it away. Get it checked out.

One of the good things about hunting meteorites is that although they can be as valuable as a gold or diamond ring, there's no moral dilemma about whether you should try to find the Martian who lost it two million years ago. :icon_cyclops_ani:

I recently saw where a guy found a meteorite that was said to be worth $600,000.00.
They put it on auction and no one bought.
They then lowered the price to $300,000.00.
No one bought.
IT is now up for auction at $200,000.00.
IT is not expected to sell even for that.
Are they worth what they say they are?
Nope. Just a way to get ratings for a dumb TV show.
They are not as rare as people would have you think.

I'm hooked too

I've been to one of the sites on the linked map, and it's been glaciated.

No meties. I even looked with a mag.

That still beats a corroded '72 Hot Wheels car! :D

Prices for meteorites vary considerably. $5.00 a gram may be about average but for a super rare lunar or martian meteorite the cost skyrockets!!!!
