Hey dowser…..I to have been confused about Meteorites. I have map dowsed a few meteorite. Only one of them was a true meteorite. The latest one is a rock that measures 7 X 7 and 5 inches high and weighs 22 pounds. That is a heavy rock. The contend is iron, nickel, granite, iridium, tantalum and titanium and some silver. Three spots on it are magnetic. The local rock shop gets excited but that’s all they know. Tomorrow I will file a window in it and see what it looks like. If you have anymore information I would like it. If you want to keep the information private that is ok to…Art

The Granite part is confusing, but maybee it's Bassalt. I send samples to Arizona college Meteorite testing place. They test it for free, meaning if it looks like a Meteorite they'll run a Spec on it, and if it passes their test, they'll certify it. I used search using uranium as a signal, and once i located a huge rock to big to move, so i busted off a peice. It had all the characteristics of a Meteorite, and I was convinced it was one, using comparison pictures of slices in a book i have. I sent the sample to the college, and waited but got anxious, so i called. The girl that runs the department told me it wasn't one, just by looking at it.. After talking with her and telling her it had everything in it, Iron, Nickle, ect. she did me a favor and tested it for me. When i got the test results back she sent me a Meteorite Spectrograph and my rock Spec. I'll have to dig it up some day and post it, but it was amazing that everything was the same Except that the Meteorite had more Nickle. It's a fine line between the both of them. There is hundreds of different types. you never know all the time..
 

Hey Dowser…Read about these Minerals. It will explain the link to Granite…Most of the make up of Meteorites are the same building blocks we have here on Earth. Most are just a combination of the elements…Art

I've never heard of it called granite specifically, but yes your right about elements and minerals being the same, some have plagioclase. I have read that some meteorites contain over 200 mineral and element combinations.. I was told once that a lunar meteorite is a aluminum bassalt combo.., not sure though i never found one. I don't see any cobalt in iron ones, i think it's what you get when a stony one burns it's way in and theirs a crust on it..
As for dowsing meteorites, all meteorites are supposed to contain even in trace amounts, nickle, iron , iridium. Now to locate stony or stony iron ones, they would have to be big, because the element percentage has to be enough to create a good enough signal, even an iron meteorite i have that weighs 100 grams, at 100 yds, doesn't create a strong dowsable signal.. So bottom line, go for the biggest signal.. I start with nickle, and if there's nickle, then check iridium, and iron.. That's all you need to locate meteorites.. Also use longer rods to distinguish further stronger signals.. I locate most my big stuff using zinc plated stock you can buy anywhere. I believe it's 3\16, but i will use two foot rods, they seperate out all the small junk and you really know when you got something sizeable to chase if they signal..
