Military Button?!?!

I found this detecting the other day. I believe it is a military button, but I am not sure of the era. Any info would be much appreciated! Thanks for looking!

the "great seal" eagle type design was put into use on US military buttons in 1902 -- that button looks old like a WW1 era type design .

I will have to clean it up a little more. How do you suggest I clean it? With a toothbrush and some mild soap?

I dont know the best way. That should be OK.
