I dug this out of the closet recently.I don't even remember where I got it.The star has on each point,1-crossed swords or scabbards,2-crossed rifles w/bayonets attached,3-either crossed cannon barrels or crossed monoculars(it's hard to tell),4-a bugle and 5-a ships anchor. The top of the medal where the eagle is perched is a place to engave a name (it is blank).I know someone out there can I.D. this, any ideas?Thanks-diggummup

Re: Military medal I.D.?

Hmm..interesting. Army AND Navy type markings...reunion pin? No Air Force reference, so its probably pretty old. Any markings on the back?

Looks like it might be for some type of shooting award. The star has what appears to be a bullseye.

???Civil War union victory pin. Would account for sabres, cannons, rifles, navy, and what looks like what was on caps of union soldiers (circles bugles).

? ? ? The bullseye rings are inlaid w/ black(maybe ebony) and it appears to be silver ,it's tarnished .I was thinking along these same lines (shooting award),but I don't know.Where's buckram? ???

Re: Military medal I.D.?

I'm guessing this is an encampment medal and ribbon for the G.A.R., (Grand Army of the Republic). The membership was open to all Union Civil War veterans. Still around and members are descendants of civil war union veterans. The rebel version of this outfit was called the U.C.V. United Confederate Veterans. These encampments began about 1870 and lasted through the 1930s. All the medals feature a five pointed star (to copy the medal of honor) and a red white and blue ribbon. buckram will give you the values no doubt. exanimo, ss

Re: Military medal I.D.?

My first guess was a Grand Army of the Republic medal but if you look close the stars look more like upside down v`s instead of stars "not indicitive of GAR medals" Also, all encampment medals of this "or any" type were clearly marked somewhere.

Diggum,
is there anything on the back or is it blank? I would guess that this is a repro made for some club for some reason or another and could date anywhere from 1870 - 1910 Just a guess!

Diggum,
After further lookng at the pic it almost looks like the bullseye could have been added at a later date, is it one piece? Also, look on the edge of the star for a 6 digit number.

On each point of the star at the tip there is a small star. There is nothing on the back at all, other than a round impession mark from the bullseye being "stamped " into place.By upside down V's,are referring to the crossed rifles, crossed sabres and crossed monoculars in 3 of the 5 points of the star? The bullseye is an attached piece, however as I just stated the back of the medal has a clear impression of a circle on the back,as if it were stamped into place by machine.I can find no markings anywhere on this. After further inspection,I can tell you it is sterling silver.I am in the process of cleaning it up now.

diggum,
I was refering to the stars on the flag . In the pic they appear to be upside down V`s.

Sterling silver is better than no silver!!!! great find BTW.

Re: Military medal I.D.?

My guess would be WW1. I found a medal here in Ontario, Canada that has all of those exact symbols on it...and it says "allies war overseas contingent" or something to that effect...plus the date 1915. So yeah, I'm almost 100% positive it's WW1 era.

Re: Military medal I.D.?

I have been around the military for most of my life (since late Vietnam era), and have not seen anything like that.
