Hello All!

I dug this yesterday and am trying to get some more information on it for the property owner. I can’t seem to find much on Harding Cream Co except for old newspaper ads. Can anyone help me with dating this piece and possibly tell me what the purpose of this piece might have been? It reads:

FRISCO
C.L. HANKS
BENNINGTON OKLA
HARDING CREAM CO

Thanks in advance! ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1549036104.362176.jpg

If you go to eBay and use the search words MILK CAN TAG it will pull up a variety of them. Some of the metal ones appear to have been soldered to the cans, especially those without holes for hanging ...

Everybody is focusing on "Harding Cream Co.", but what you need to research is...

FRISCO
C.L. HANKS
BENNINGTON OKLA

This was likely the name of the farm or farmer who originally owned the milk can this tag was originally attached to.
My thinking was that the Harding Cream Co. gave these cans to the dairy farmers to use to ship their cream in to the dairy.
These cans most likely circulated through the dairy farm communities in Oklahoma and Texas in the 1920s - 50s.

PS. If you wanted to mail it to me, I'll tumble it for you and mail it back.

The word Frisco probably refers to the Frisco Rail Line that ran throughout the Midwest. It was both a passenger and freight line. Their home office was in Oklahoma City ...

According to this 1923 article, the Harding Cream Company had "over 50,000 satisfied patrons." No doubt C.L. Hanks was just one of them. But finding specific information about a small dairy farmer in the 1920s is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Notice where it says "Will ... return can" ...

However ...

I did find this 1940 U.S. Census for C.L. Hanks of Oklahoma. If you save and zoom it you will see where the entire family lived in Bryan County Oklahoma in 1935. Bennington is in Bryan County. It shows C.L. Hanks as a farmer with his son, who was the head of household at the time. C.L. was 55 years old. It appears to me that the Hanks family moved from Bennington to Farris Township sometime between 1935 and 1940. I'll see what I can find for the 1920 and 1930 Census. That is if someone else doesn't do it before I do.

If you contact the Great-great granddaughter, Jennifer Dixon, listed in the obituary, you might be able to find out a lot about C.L. Hanks. She would probably get a kick seeing the tag you found. Her email address is at the bottom of the obituary.

Thanks - its fun when stuff can be found - but not so fun when you have to dig through a whole field of haystacks and end up with zilch. I don't have an account with Ancestry.com and just lucked out on the 1940 Census. So I won't be able to check the 1920 and 1930 Census. If someone has an Ancestry account, I'm sure there is a lot more to be found about the Hanks family.
