Had the day off today and decided to hit a Mill Race Pond that had been drained for years. The silvers are an 1890 Seated Dime and a 1907 Barber Quarter. An 1865 2 Cent Peice. A well worn Flying Cent. A 1912 V Nickel. A Union Flour Token and finally a Broach of some sort with two orange stones. The majority of the finds were located along where the pond bank was located. I guess maybe they were fishermen losses.

:o :o Those are some great finds. I don't know what one would be my favorite. Seated, beautiful looking Barber Quarter, 2 center or that awesome token ::), congrats.

Those are some very awsome finds...

Beautiful. Flying Eagles in any condition are rare birds. Quite the haul, there.

Thats gotta be some sort of record for different types of coins in one hunt. Flying eagle, "V", seated, Barber, 2 center, and a token. Thats a great day! Congrats!

Hey folks, I would like to try and clean up the Flying Cent and the 2 Cent peice. Do you think I can do this with the Peroxide Treatment ? Never used Peroxide but have seen here on the site where it seems to work wonders on some of the coins. Thanks .

NICE FINDS!!!

Old mills were attractions to folks because of trade and commerce, but also because it was fun to dip their toes in the water there.  I have seen many old photos of folks gathered at the water's edge at old mills--so perhaps these were swimming or recreational losses.  Fantastic variety of coin finds there--I just LOVE it!

You could try the peroxide method, but please experiment with an IH cent or wheatie or two first. The 2cent piece looks like the better candidate for it--I've personally had good luck with coins that have a green patina (rather than a brown one). It'll at least take some of the crusties off of the coin. It does seem that peroxide darkens the coins a bit though--just so you know. Not much, but a bit. So read up on it, experiement with some wheats, and try it out. Don in SJ and I both have a good post on the subject in the Cleaning and Preservation Threads.

Thanks Buckleboy, I will check out the threads. If it works out ok, I will start the laundry with my 18 year hoard of Large Copper Green-Crusties.

LOL Sounds like a week-long project! I'm glad you've got some to experiment with. I think you'll be happy with the results--and I look forward to seeing them posted here in this thread.

Best Wishes,

Nice haul with some nice looking coins :)

I think those orange stones are called citrines, in old england they were used to keep bad spirits away and promote good health.

Nice finds!!! Gonna be tough to find an encore for that trip....that's what makes this hobby so great!!

Sure are some nice keepers.

What a day! It's been so long since I had that kind of mix - age and variety. Congrats on a great hunt!

Here is the 2 Cent Coin cleaned up with the peroxide method. I actually like how it breaks up the green gook. While the Peroxide Method is not a wizard trick to make a coin look like it came fresh from the mint, it will help in identification of a Crusty Coin instead of using an SOS Pad. I will certainly use the Peroxide with the next Large Copper I dig and cant identify.
