? ? ? ?Sure looks and sounds like a Hard Times Token.? I've known of them, but i really don't know anything about them or when they were issued. Maybe the great depression.

Here's what I posted over in the "whatsit forum". These are way newer than hard times tokens - by about a century, give or take.

According to Tony Chibbaro's book, South Carolina Tokens, the denomination is actually 5 pounds of ice. This one and one for 10 pounds of ice are listed along with one from the spooling department of the Buffalo Cotton Mills that just has a "5" for a denomination. He does not list values in his book, so I can't help there. He does say that the Buffalo Cotton Mill was first listed in 1904 and in later years became part of Union-Buffalo Mills.
