Hi everyone I need some much needed advice. I am looking to purchase one of these two detectors and I have no idea which one to purchase. I am looking for a good all around detector that I can use in the water and on land. This will be my metal detector and any advice is greatly appreciated.

Both these detectors will be heavy to use on dry land and neither will pinpoint well enough for finding a coin in the grass so you won't mess up the grass looking for it.

Fisher 1280 is not bad as a water detector and the best that can be said is it is simple to operate, a true turn on an go. It isn't real deep, and can miss a gold ring laying near iron unlike the Excal. Makes one sound or tone so it can't id items and worse it will false near any saltwater wet sand. Batteries will last a long time.

Excal 1000 is however the Caddy of detectors for beaches and the water together. Still not the best for dry land coin hunting due to weight of a water unit. Rechargable battery pack. Due to id and iron mask it can locate a gold ring very near an sometimes even under a piece of iron unlike all other detectors. It costs more for the Excal than the 1280-X. Very deep too.

Have you thought about a Garretts Infinium LS? It may be what you are looking for. Good luck!! HH
